When we think of grief, it’s usually about death or a broken relationship. And, while COVID-19 has led to many physical deaths, it has also been the cause of other loss: job loss, financial loss, school loss, and activities loss. Our current situation has us grieving for the loss of control we feel over our lives. We want things back the way we had them.
In some cases, though, this situation has caused us to re-evaluate our lives. Many have discovered or rediscovered cooking and baking, family time, and, most importantly, a slower pace of life. Some people are focusing on those things and are functioning well with this new life.
The reality, though, is so many are struggling to cope. It can be tough for those accustomed to being out and busy to now navigate working from home or having a lot of free time because they don’t have work. Others are on the front lines while their loved ones are worried sick at home about them. Just watching the news or reading your social media feed can create undue stress. And, even in the best conditions, the nearly two months of shelter-in-place can start to chip away at your mental health.
If you are struggling to cope with this new type of grief or you know someone that is, watch the video below from my online Coffee Connection with Grief Specialist Rosie Fox. She shares numerous tips on how to cope as well as help others around you to do the same.
